Every week, I am going to try something new with my four kids and husband. Matter of fact, I'll alternate weeks. I think we all can identify with something we wish we did better as a parent or spouse. To start it off, I'm going with building self-esteem in the kids. I once saw Toni Morrison on Oprah and she asked a question, "When your child walks in the room, does your face light up?" For me, that is a loaded question that made me ask myself, "What message have I been sending to my kids? Are they aware of how happy they make me? Am I showing them how special they are? Am I making them feel warm and fuzzy?" I couldn't answer yes to all of the questions and decided then that I needed to change that. It's hard dividing attention amongst four children. But, today, as I write this at 7:30am, I am making a decision to light my face up whenever I see them. For the first few days even if they go to the bathroom and come back into the room, I'll act excited to see them every time. From what Toni Morrison said, it'll become a habit and will become authentic. I can't wait for the kids to come home from school so I can try this out. Try it with your kids and let me know how it turns out.
